Test Managers are often required to submit estimates of how long a testing phase will take and how many resources will be required for the duration of the project. This is usually asked for at the study phase of a project, when there is little documentation available as to the detail of the development work required. As a result it can often be difficult to give accurate estimates or to know where to start at this uncertain stage of the development.

Ensure Estimates Include Caveats & Assumptions

The first thing to start off with is a list of assumptions upon which the estimate is based. There will be many variables being discussed at this stage of the project so start by mapping the 'worst case scenario' in terms of length of the project and resource intensity. This can then be presented as a plus or minus 50% accurate estimate together with the list of assumptions made.

Test Managers are often asked to provide several different estimates based on varying implementation plans. If the first estimate is based on the most resource/time intensive proposition - it is easier to slice and dice this original plan at a later stage - adding and removing assumptions as different permeations of the solution are presented.
