According to U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1, 2010, and lasts until Nov. 1, 2010. During that time, countries heavily deforested, such as Haiti, could have problems, groups say. They are doing their part to help prevent that or reduce the damage.

As part of its technologies for the automotive industry, GOSO introduced the AutoNation Nissan LEAF Plant-A-Tree Facebook promotion for AutoNation Inc. The campaign allows fans of the Facebook page to have a tree planted on their behalf in select locations, said the company in a press release. Locations include:

  • Haiti
  • The Philippines
  • India
  • Brazil

The program began the week of May 25, 2010 during TechCrunch Disrupt, a large technology conference in New York. GOSO and AutoNation social media teams have worked on bringing innovation to the automotive industry for several months.

“It's great to see an automotive group that is so environmentally conscious and active,” said Leandro Monteiro of Trees for the Future (Plant-trees.org). The organization is working with GOSO and AutoNation on their environmental goals, she said.

Trees for the Future Warns of Hurricane Season

The upcoming Atlantic hurricane season could be deadly for Haiti, and Trees for the Future of Silver Spring, Md., is doing its part to help raise environmental awareness. Trees for the Future is concerned because of widespread deforestation, said Monteiro. The organization wants Haiti and other countries to develop a reforestation program to plan and protect all existing trees as soon as possible.

Hurricanes makes problems worse for areas where deforestation has taken place, said Ethan Budiansky, head of the Africa and Caribbean program and leader of the Plant-A-Tree program in Haiti. Tree roots normally absorb extra rainwater and stabilize soil, reducing the impact of a hurricane, but without trees, a major storm would be devastating. Haiti still is recovering from the devastating earthquake in January of 2010.
